Data recovery for a dvd disk?

We recorded our wedding with a video recorder that took the little small dvd disks. but when we went to view it on the recorder, the screen said disk error. there was a prompt to repair the damage and we said yes but it said it couldnt repair the damage. we dont even have a clue how the thing could have been damaged to begin with. Does anyone know of an inexpensive data recovery service. we are hearing quotes of upwards of $400+.
